More than 100 species of birds and 400 species of plants can be found in the wider area and its airspace is a migratory bird way in the Mediterranean. The flora of the area reminds the African element because of the countless cacti and low vegetation.
The two uninhabited islands of the area are opposite the Gramvousa peninsula and bear the names Agria Gramvousa and Imeri Gramvousa. Imeri Gramvousa can be visited by boat that sails from the small town of Kissamos and anchors to the south of the island. Here there are two large bays where you can swim and enjoy the unique view of the peninsula and the lagoon of Balos. Typical sights of the area are the famous wreck of Motorship Dimitrios II, located between the two bays we mentioned above, and the Venetian fortress of Gramvousa, which stands at an altitude of 150meters west of the beach.
